In Mumbai’s Chor Bazaar, a man waits in front of his shop full of junk waiting for customers. This kind of shop is getting rarer as meaning of recycling changes. Chor Bazaar is now squeezed geographically as furniture shops expand into it. The main customers seem to be set designers for numerous TV shows and movies; as a result, many of the neighbouring shops have changed character. This man is balanced on the breaking wave of history, and I suspect that he will lose his surfboard soon.

having been in India 25 years ago and now I agree. I had remembered tiny shops packed next to each other and now I find shopping malls. I’m sure as attitudes and resources change so too will shops like this.

I love these resourceful shop keepers. I remember whole streets of stores like that in Singapore but last time I was there they all seemed to have been moved into tidy, tall buildings.
